The train rolls through a dark night.
Captain Black and Professor Shade closely examine the artefact.
“It’s telling us to go West,” says Black.
“Ah,” replies Shade, “I deduce that it depends on the direction of the train. Our next stop is Threeberry. We should take our bearings when the train pulls into the station.”

Black, it ‘s elementary. Black Threeberry doesn’t exist….
“look, the train is an artefact, it pulls the artefact train station along”

Captain , let’s stop at the station.”
> no, we don’t, altho “Ah,” I can deduce a station.”
Train says it’s Threeberry.

taking Shade through the night was always a bewildering business
forever detecting a cluster of probabilities
revolving options, weighing evidence
Black (the more straightforward of the pair), found it disconcerting
he couldn’t deny the journey was fascinating
but the question remained, would they ever arrive?
