hey, are you building up a great heap of muck in your living room too?

mind you, i’m thinking of clearing mine up – those aliens don’t know whether they’re coming or going.

i just remembered a trip to manitoba about 15 years ago
and something tangetically related to the close encounters
trash mix … i don’t know if the containers still exist, but
i remember the signs saying Put Your Trash Into Orbit,
5 minutes, followed by others, 3 minutes, 20 seconds,
and finally a spaceship-shaped, roadside trash container
i can’t locate my photograph of the container and a google
search was fruitless, but i did find a government document:
HIGHWAY TRAFFIC H60 — M.R. 264/88
Orbits (MI-23)
11(1) An “Orbit” sign may be used on highways at selected locations to
indicate the approximate time required to reach the location of a trash receptacle at
maximum permitted highway speed.
11(2) An “Orbit” sign shall
(a) be rectangular in shape and erected so that the long dimension is horizontal;
(b) be not less than 2700 mm in width and not less than 1200 mm in height;
(c) be bordered in blue and divided by a diagonal line from top right to bottom
left, colored white in the upper half and yellow in the lower half and displaying
in blue characters not less than 60 mm in width and not less than 200 mm in
height the words and figures “Put Your Trash Into ‘Orbit’ … 5 Minutes”;
(d) be displayed so that the figure “5” referred to in clause (c) may be varied to
indicate any other number in minutes;
(e) be reflectorized so as to show the same color and shape by night as by day
seems to me that there may be a business opportunity for the remix,
creating musical icons on spaceships? or maybe on-screen alerts for
trash receptacles in space?

i hear the siren call
am drawn to “Orbit”
bordered in blue and divided diagonally
reflectorized trashily
i exceed permitted speeds
change my shape by day and night
in width and height
not less than the long dimension
oh
wayhigh receptacle
5 minutes?
Lovely sounds, mum-like trashcan hands, melancholic pixels.
creating musical icons on spaceships… sign me up
on-screen alerts for space trashcans sounds like a smelly business, though
it seems space already “smells like burnt almond cookie” …
